German Cartel Office calls for new rules to award rights to broadcast Bundesliga game
Thus, the Cartel Office has asked DFL to change its tender model to award the rights for the seasons 2021/22 to 2024/25. The next tender includes four packages. Under the rules of the last tender, a single pay TV provider could have had the possibility to buy all the packages. According to the report, the antitrust authority prefers that two packages should be offered to streaming platforms.
Streaming services, on the other hand, should not be allowed to purchase the exclusive rights to broadcast the games for all four packages. If streaming services buy all the packages, at least one should be offered to a pay-TV broadcaster with satellite and cable network access. The magazine "Sponsors" reported instead that the only restriction would be the non-exclusivity of one of the four packages. This means that one package would be shared with a streaming provider.
For the next tender, the four live packages for pay-TV would include the conferences, the game at 15:30 hrs and the top game at 18:30 hrs on Saturdays. The fourth package includes the games on Friday and Sunday. There is also a package for free TV. This includes three games of the first division, four games of the relegation division, the opening game of the second division, and the Supercup.
